ABOUT US
Who we are
We are aspiring writers with an interest in different forms of writing and a desire to meet regularly with like-minded people. Our members are writers of all ages, ethnicities and writing abilities. The West Coast Writers' Circle (WCWC) operates without a formal committee structure and the co-ordinator for each year
is selected by group consensus. The co-ordinator leads the monthly meetings and has a team to take care of admin, planning and communication.
What we do
Various topics are covered in meetings throughout the year and members are encouraged to suggest topics and guest speakers. Each meeting is different but there is usually inspiration, writing exercises,
a presentation or guest speaker, reading of a voluntary assignment from the previous month, etc.
Meeting venue
Milnerton Library, Pienaar Road, Milnerton, Cape Town
Meetings
We meet monthly from January to November on the last Saturday of the month (except public holidays) from 09:30 to 11:45. As our time is limited due to the library's operating hours, we start promptly at 9:30 and finish just before 11:45.
How to join us
Whatever your writing interest is, you are welcome to join us to see if we are a good fit. We don't have a formal membership so you may stay or leave the group as you wish but we do recommend coming along to a couple of meetings before deciding. Please fill in the contact form below to be added to our email distribution list for more information.
Photographs
From time to time, photographs are taken during meetings for this website and our other social media platforms. They are only used to promote the West Coast Writers Circle. If you attend a meeting where photographs are being taken, and you do not want us to publish any including you, please tell the person running that meeting. If you don't, we will assume you have no objection to your image being included.
Courtesy
Out of respect for our fellow members, we ask that side conversations be avoided during meetings, that the speaker be allowed to speak without interruption, and that questions are indicated by a raised hand.
Cell Phones
Please put your cell phone off during the meeting, or if it is essential you stay in contact then switch it to silent or vibrate. And please show respect by resisting the urge to scroll or text while someone else is speaking.
Refreshments
We provide tea, coffee and biscuits on a self-service basis. Please remember to bring your own mug for your tea/coffee. We do have a few spares if you forget.
Writings on the Wall (WoW)
Every month a topic or theme is set for a voluntary assignment of about 800 words of prose or 40 lines of poetry. The following month, contributors receive feedback in some form during the meeting and are encouraged to send items to the email address below to be placed onto the website for reading between meetings.
Common sense, courtesy and caution
The WCWC has a ‘no censorship’ policy but we do ask that when writing about potentially sensitive topics, e.g. religion, sex or politics, members use common sense, courtesy and caution, and are not deliberately offensive. Also, we are a diverse group of writers so members may occasionally be exposed to something that offends their sensibilities. In such cases, we ask that you respond with forbearance and dignity.
Socials
There are sometimes additional social meetings at homes, coffee shops, etc. These are aimed at fostering friendships and networking amongst members.
